A fat burnernever works alone. It is part of a comprehensive approach: adjusted diet, physical activity, sleep. Formulas based on green tea, Moro orange extracts, and appetite-control active ingredients: each family follows a distinct logic, and the right choice depends first on the objective pursued. Designed for pharmacy advice, theBiocyte slimming rangeprioritizes identified active ingredients, declared dosages, and transparent label reading.
Fat burner: what is it for and who is it for?
In common usage, the term fat burnerrefers to food supplements formulated around active ingredients related to lipid metabolism, energy expenditure, or satiety. It is not a regulatory category. What is commonly called the "fat-burning effect"actually covers several distinct physiological mechanisms, and these are the ones that need to be understood.
What happens in the body
Mobilizing an adipose reserve requires that stored triglycerides be released in the form of fatty acids (lipolysis), then converted into energy in the mitochondria (beta-oxidation). This process only leads to a lasting reduction in body fat if energy expenditure exceeds intake over several weeks. A fat burner can therefore support a caloric deficit, never replace it. To understand what studies say about these mechanisms, see our analysis ofthe effectiveness of fat burners.
Who is it for?
These formulas are primarily intended for adults engaged in a structured approach:
- a dietary rebalancing already in place;
- a cutting phase for athletes, where the goal is to reduce body fat while preserving muscle mass;
- a defined period of a few weeks, with monitoring milestones.
They are not suitable for minors, nor for pregnant or breastfeeding women (see precautions for use below).
The different types of fat burners
Under the same name coexist formulas with very different logics. Distinguishing them is the first step toward an informed choice.
Thermogenics and green tea-based formulas
A classic thermogenicrelies on high doses of caffeine or on plants that contain it, such as guarana or mate. These formulas are often taken before training. Caffeine is studied in physiology for its role in thermogenesis, but it has no authorized health claim in the European Union. Its stimulating effect also requires monitoring total daily intake.
Biocyte formulas make a different choice: a deliberately low caffeine content, from 6 to 12 mg per day depending on the product, which is the equivalent of a fraction of a cup of coffee.The Fatburner combines green tea extract, L-carnitine, red ginseng, and vitamin B5, which contributes to normal energy metabolism. Green tea falls under so-called "pending" European evaluation claims, related to the metabolismof fats.
Moro orange-based formulas
A blood orange variety grown in Sicily, the Moro orange is rich in anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for its color. Its standardized extract, marketed under the name Morosil®, has been the subject of randomized placebo-controlled trials in adults. It is at the heart ofMorosil® supplements, offered in powder or liquid form. TheFat Burner Max with Morosil® 400combines it with green tea, L-carnitine, green coffee, and dandelion root, as well as vitamin B5.
Appetite-control formulas
Another approach consists of acting on the control of intake rather than expenditure. Theseappetite-control formulasrely notably on chromium, which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood sugar and the normal metabolism of macronutrients. They often combine it with plant extracts such as gymnema or nopal. The feeling of satiety also largely depends on the composition of meals: proteins, dietary fiber, plate volume.
Drainage products: another logic
A drainage productdoes not concern adipose tissue but water balance. Water retention(feeling of bloating, heavy legs) and body fat are two distinct phenomena, often confused. The plants associated withdrainage products, such as birch, dandelion, or nettle, fall under claims pending European evaluation. A drainage product and a fat burner therefore meet different expectations.
Key active ingredients of a fat burner: how to read the label
The label says more than the product name. Four reflexes allow you to judge a formula.
Think in terms of daily dose
It is the quantity provided per day that counts, not the quantity per capsule. For vitamins and minerals, the percentage of nutrient reference values (NRVs) indicates whether the intake is significant. Moreover, a claim can only be used if the daily dose covers at least 15% of the NRVs of the nutrient concerned.
Check the standardization of extracts
The mention "green tea extract 500 mg" remains incomplete without its standardization, that is, the guaranteed content of active compounds, such as EGCG for green tea. A standardized extract ensures a reproducible content from one batch to another.
Add up the sources of caffeine
The same formula can combine several sources: anhydrous caffeine, guarana, green tea, green coffee, mate. Beyond 150 mg per day, the mention "high caffeine content" is mandatory. Coffee, tea, and energy drinks consumed elsewhere are added to this total. This is also why Biocyte formulas stick to a few milligrams per day.
Identify what the claim relates to
A compliant label links each benefit to a named nutrient, for example: "vitamin B5 contributes to normal energy metabolism". These claims are often accompanied by precise conditions. Glucomannan, a konjac fiber, thus only qualifies for its claim on weight lossat a rate of 3 g per day, as part of a low-calorie diet. A general promise made about the product, without an identified active ingredient or associated dose, is a red flag.
Knowing how to read a study
The strongest studies share a few characteristics:
- they are randomized, double-blind, and conducted versus placebo;
- their sample size is sufficient to be significant;
- they last long enough to measure a change in body composition, generally several weeks;
- the studied population is comparable to the person considering the product.
This is the framework that Biocyte, a pioneer in nutricosmetics since 2006, applies to its slimming formulas: documented active ingredients, declared dosages, a formulation designed to be defended at the pharmacy counter.
How to choose your fat burner according to your objective
There is no universal fat burner: the right formula depends on what you are looking to support, your tolerance to caffeine, and the framework in which the approach is set.
The case of the belly and waist circumference
No supplement works locally: the mobilization of fats takes place on the scale of the entire organism. Deep abdominal fat, known as visceral fat, however responds particularly well to the combination of a caloric deficit and physical activity practiced every week. A flat bellytherefore results from a comprehensive approach, and the waist circumferenceremains the most telling indicator to monitor its evolution. To learn more about the difference between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat, see our article onabdominal fat.
How to integrate a fat burner into your lifestyle
A fat burnershows its full measure when it is incorporated into a coherent routine: the time of intake adapted to its formula, an adjusted diet, physical activity, and sleep form a whole.
Adapt the time of intake to the formula
- Green tea-based formulas: during a meal, never on an empty stomach, and preferably in the morning.
- Appetite-control formulas: before the meal, with a large glass of water.
- Drainage products: in the morning, diluted in a large glass of water.
In all cases, the daily dose and duration indicated on the label are authoritative. The programs generally last a few weeks, followed by a break.
Meet the conditions that really matter
A fat burner only makes sense in a coherent framework:
- a moderate caloric deficit, rather than a severe restriction that is difficult to maintain;
- a sufficient intake of proteins, which contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass;
- physical activity combining muscle strengthening and endurance;
- sufficient sleep, since lack of sleep is associated with an increase in appetite.
Monitor your progress with the right milestones
Weight fluctuates from one day to the next depending on hydration. Waist circumference, sensations, and comfort in clothes provide better information about the evolution of body composition.
Precautions for use: what you need to know before starting
- Public: reserved for adults, not recommended for those under 18 as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- Green tea: do not consume on an empty stomach, nor on the same day as another product containing green tea. The intake of EGCG must remain below 800 mg per day.
- Caffeine: the EFSA considers that an intake of up to 400 mg per day, and 200 mg per dose, does not raise concerns for a healthy adult. Sensitive people may experience nervousness, increased heart rate, or disturbed sleep at lower doses. You must count all sources of the day.
- Plant extracts: certain plants, such as gymnema or ginseng, call for professional advice in case of medical follow-up, especially blood sugar. Formulas containing chicory, dandelion, burdock, or artichoke are not recommended in case of known sensitivity to Asteraceae.
- Medical follow-up: anyone under medical supervision or taking prescribed products should seek the advice of their doctor or pharmacist before starting. The pharmacist is the natural interlocutor to check the compatibility of a formula.
- General rules: do not exceed the recommended daily dose. A food supplement does not replace a varied and balanced diet nor a healthy lifestyle. Keep out of reach of young children.
